Roll Off Dumpster Sizes

10, 20, 30, and 40 yard roll-off dumpsters explained, with real project examples for each size.

Roll Off Dumpster Sizes

Pick the right size the first time

Roll-off dumpsters are measured in cubic yards of capacity. The four common sizes are 10, 20, 30, and 40 yards. Picking right saves you a second delivery and the associated fees.

10-yard dumpster

Capacity: About 3 pickup-truck loads. Footprint roughly 14' L x 7.5' W x 3.5' H.

Best for: Small bathroom remodels, concrete and dirt-only projects (heavy material caps the size you can use), one-room cleanouts, single-layer roofing tear-offs up to about 1,500 sq ft.

Why people pick it: Fits in tight driveways, low profile, easy to load.

20-yard dumpster

Capacity: About 6 pickup-truck loads. Footprint roughly 22' L x 7.5' W x 4.5' H.

Best for: Most home renovations, mid-sized cleanouts, roofing tear-offs up to about 3,000 sq ft, deck removal, flooring projects.

Why people pick it: The most popular size. Fits most residential projects without being overkill.

30-yard dumpster

Capacity: About 9 pickup-truck loads. Footprint roughly 22' L x 7.5' W x 6' H.

Best for: Whole-house cleanouts, additions, major remodels, large roofing, light commercial buildouts.

Why people pick it: Tall walls make it easy to load big items without breaking them down.

40-yard dumpster

Capacity: About 12 pickup-truck loads. Footprint roughly 22' L x 7.5' W x 8' H.

Best for: New construction, major commercial buildouts, demolition, large light-debris projects (siding, framing, drywall).

Why people pick it: Maximum volume for bulky but light debris.

Weight matters as much as size

Heavy debris (concrete, brick, dirt, roofing shingles) hits weight caps fast. For these materials, smaller containers are often correct — a 10-yard full of concrete weighs more than a 40-yard full of drywall. We'll talk you through it during booking.

If you're between sizes

Go up. A second delivery costs more than the size difference. We'd rather you have room than fight your container.

Choosing the Right Dumpster Size — FAQs

How do I visualize dumpster volumes?

One cubic yard equals roughly one residential dishwasher's worth of volume. A 10-yard fits in a single parking space; a 40-yard takes 2.5 parking spaces and stands almost 8 feet tall. Container dimensions are usually published on the rental contract.

What's the weight limit on each size?

Typical limits: 10-yard 2 tons, 20-yard 3 tons, 30-yard 4 tons, 40-yard 5–6 tons. Overage is billed per ton at the disposal-facility rate. Heavy materials (concrete, brick, dirt, roofing) usually justify a smaller clean-load container with a flat tonnage rate.

Common mistakes when sizing

Sizing by project type instead of debris volume, forgetting that bulky items (furniture, mattresses) eat volume without weight, and underestimating roofing tonnage. When in doubt, ask us to size based on the debris itself.
